Biography
Formed in Los Angeles, California, by founding members Chad Graham and Alan Powell, the Christian pop band Anthem Lights originated in 2007 as Graham’s solo endeavor. Once the two had completed initial work on material intended for Graham’s first release, they chose to enlarge the effort into a quartet and brought vocalists Kyle Kupecky and Caleb Grimm aboard. Performing at that time as Yellow Cavalier, the four singers issued their self-titled debut EP in 2009, then adopted the name Anthem Lights the next year. After securing a deal with Reunion Records, the group issued both an EP and a full-length debut—each titled Anthem Lights—in 2011. The Acoustic Sessions EP arrived the following year.
You Have My Heart, the band’s second album, surfaced in early 2014, fronted by the single “Hide Your Love Away,” which became their strongest Christian-chart performer to date. Escape, the third album, reached listeners before the close of that same year, buoyed by the charting tracks “Just Fall” and “Run Away.” Around this period the quartet also launched a series of mini-albums devoted to outside material under the Covers heading; while most selections were recent pop numbers from acts such as One Direction, Taylor Swift, and OneRepublic, the band also revisited its influences through renditions of Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” On the 2017 project Hymns the members applied their signature harmonies to a collection of classic hymns and contemporary Christian standards. Later that year pop singer Spencer Kane replaced founding member Alan Powell and made his first appearance on the fifth album, Painted Skies. In March 2018 the group issued the follow-up Hymns, Vol. 2.
