Beware of Darkness came together in 2010 when vocalist and guitarist Kyle Nicolaides, also credited as Kyle Nicolai, joined forces with drummer Tony Cupito, channeling the gritty, blues-rooted guitar lines of Led Zeppelin along with the stripped-down energy of two-piece acts such as the White Stripes and the Black Keys. During repeated runs between their Los Angeles home base and Santa Monica, the duo encountered bassist Daniel Curcio and grew into a three-piece. The band kept up a steady live schedule that included a showcase at the SXSW festival plus a 2012 support slot alongside the Wombats, the same year the Howl EP surfaced. Their first studio album, Orthodox, emerged on Bright Antenna Records in 2013 and earned them an opening position on Smashing Pumpkins’ European summer dates. Sanctuary Season, a follow-up EP, appeared in 2015, after which the second album, Are You Real?, landed in 2016 on the same Bright Antenna imprint. Lionel Forrester, Jr. stepped in for Cupito on drums shortly thereafter.
