A vocalist whose command of timeless soul traditions pairs with fluency in contemporary pop and ease within hip-hop realms, Bobbi Storm launched her recording efforts in R&B before shifting focus to gospel in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Labeling herself “God’s Holy Mixer,” she cultivated an approach that converts secular material into gospel expressions by drawing directly from original tracks and reworking their melodies within devotional contexts. That approach surfaced most clearly on her breakthrough release, “We Can’t Forget Him,” which reworks Michael McDonald’s hit “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” and reached the summit of Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs tally toward the close of 2023.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 3, 1987, Storm grew up as the sole music enthusiast in her home. Following studies at Michigan State University, she committed to a professional path, drawing influence from R&B and pop artists of the early 2000s. She accepted an array of engagements—weddings, birthdays, and corporate functions—until signing with Songbook Entertainment, the Troy Taylor–operated imprint affiliated with Trey Songz. Her initial national exposure came via a 2016 appearance on the Fox series Star.

In 2017 she contributed to the “Trap Choir” on 2 Chainz & Gucci Mane’s modest rap success “Good Drank.” That year also brought her debut single, “Poor Dat,” followed in 2018 by “Feelings,” then “Favors (UnPlugged)” and “Boy Bye,” with “La La” arriving in 2019. “Beautiful Robbery” surfaced in 2021, while 2022 yielded the Rod Hardy duet “What’s Love” alongside her own “Lazy Love.”

Her turn toward gospel unfolded amid this sequence of releases, catalyzed by a 2021 fast during which a spiritual vision prompted her to adapt Muni Long’s “Hours and Hours” as an offering to the Lord. Through her growing catalog of “Holy Mixes” tracks she earned a featured spot on Maverick City Music’s “Firm Foundation (He’s Gonna Make a Way),” included on The Maverick Way, which received a nomination for Best Gospel Album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. Though not personally nominated, Storm marked the recognition on November 10, 2023, by performing “We Can’t Forget Him” at full volume aboard a Delta flight, an act that nearly resulted in her removal; she responded, “I sing for the Lord, I’m doing what the Lord is telling me to do,” an incident that generated extensive coverage. Anchored by its clear sample of Michael McDonald’s smooth-rock staple “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near),” “We Can’t Forget Him” held the top spot on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart late in 2023 and remained inside the Top Ten into the early months of 2024.
