Biography
Boy Jumps Ship blends classic heavy rock with an inventive spin on post-hardcore, forming a quartet rooted in Newcastle, U.K. The group assembled in 2010 once the members, longtime friends from college who had each pursued separate musical ventures, saw those earlier efforts conclude and decided instead to jam and compose together. Its lineup consists of vocalist and guitarist Si Todd, guitarist Jonathan Douglas, bass guitarist Jonny Rob, and drummer Gav Gates. The band issued a self-titled EP in 2011 and quickly built a presence on the regional live circuit through frequent performances.
Sustained road work across the U.K. and Europe brought wider attention, with the quartet’s high-energy, rapid shows and their bright yet forceful sound drawing parallels to Taking Back Sunday and Biffy Clyro. Two additional EPs followed—Engines in 2011 and Be Good, Be Gracious in 2012—while the band maintained a busy touring schedule that included support slots for Arcane Roots and Young Guns. In 2014 the group joined Rude Records and unveiled its first official single, “Still Alive,” taken from the fourth EP, Lovers & Fighters.
After continued touring, the four-piece entered the studio to track its debut full-length with producer Larry Hibbins, known for his work with Marmozets and Hundred Reasons, aided by a grant from the PRS for Music Foundation that supported greater artistic autonomy. Late in 2015 the band signed with Amazing Record Co., and in early 2016 it released the album Wake Up to broad critical approval. The record features sharp, intense guitar lines, driving drums, and expansive choruses; its lead track, “Burn,” drew early praise from Kerrang! Magazine and the BBC Radio One Rock Show.
