Biography
Formed in Sydney during 2012, Stand Atlantic quickly distinguished themselves through melody-driven pop-punk, first earning notice for their high-energy, emotionally charged stage presence that eventually secured a major-label contract. Their initial full-length effort, Skinny Dipping, arrived on Hopeless Records in 2018 and set the stage for broader recognition, which grew further with the subsequent pair of albums; the 2022 release F.E.A.R. reached the ARIA Top Ten. Early momentum for the band’s fourth album, Was Here, came from the 2024 single “GIRL$,” a collaboration with PVRIS and Bruses, before the LP appeared later that year.
The original lineup consisted of singer and guitarist Bonnie Fraser, bassist David Potter, guitarist Arthur Taak, and drummer Jordan Jansons. After issuing the independent single “Breakaway,” Jansons exited and was succeeded by Jonno Panichi, who performed on the 2015 debut EP A Place Apart. In the following two years the group built its profile through extensive touring alongside As It Is, State Champs, and Cute Is What We Aim For. Taak’s departure prompted Potter to switch to lead guitar while the band relied on a touring bassist. Stand Atlantic became the first Australian act signed to Italian pop-punk specialists Rude Records in 2017.
Bolstered by label support, the quartet opened New Found Glory’s sold-out Australian run that summer and issued the Sidewinder EP on Rude Records in September, drawing favorable notices and airplay on Triple J. A European support tour with Britain’s ROAM closed out the year, and early 2018 found them on the road in Australia with Knuckle Puck. The September single “Lavender Bones” coincided with the announcement of their signing to Hopeless Records, followed a month later by the release of Skinny Dipping, which expanded their audience within the genre. Shortly afterward, touring bassist Miki Rich was elevated to permanent member status.
Their 2020 sophomore album, Pink Elephant, adopted a more experimental stance marked by polished, electronics-heavy production that highlighted the group’s pop leanings and entered the ARIA charts at number 23. A 2021 collaboration with nothing, nowhere. on “Deathwish” achieved substantial streaming success and previewed the third LP. F.E.A.R., issued in mid-2022, introduced a modestly more aggressive sonic palette and included appearances by Royal & the Serpent and Tom the Mail Man, ultimately becoming the band’s first Top Ten entry. The next album cycle began in 2023 with “Sex on the Beach,” continued in early 2024 via “Warzone” and the PVRIS- and Bruses-assisted “GIRL$,” and incorporated the intense track “Frenemies,” all of which anchored Was Here upon its August 2024 arrival.
