Biography
A French DJ, producer, and actor, Cedric Gervais rose to prominence with his multi-platinum, Grammy-winning remix of Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" from 2013. Beyond that success with Del Rey, he has reworked material from numerous other pop and rock performers for club play while maintaining a steady stream of original releases dating back to the early 2000s. Through his own Sleaze and Sleaze Industry imprints, as well as heavyweight dance outlet Ultra and major-label Island, Gervais has issued a wide range of recordings. His studio albums have shifted between original productions such as Experiment (2006) and Miamication (2011) and mainstream DJ mix compilations.
Born Cédric DePasquale in Marseille, Gervais began spinning records as a teenage resident at LeQueen in his hometown of Paris. He moved to Miami Beach in 1998 to further his professional prospects. Just three years later he started issuing his own tracks on Ultra sublabel You, and his debut commercial DJ mix, The House Sessions, appeared in 2003. Already a sought-after remix specialist by that point, he kept delivering original 12" material, frequently via his digital Sleaze and physical Sleaze Industry labels, and completed his first artist album, Experiment, in 2006. Miamication, his follow-up full-length, arrived in 2011. The subsequent two years marked his commercial peak. "Molly" reached number five on the U.K. dance chart and later supplied the sample for Tyga's track of the same name. Even greater impact came from Gervais' 2013 treatment of Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness," which entered the Top Ten on the pop charts in the U.K., Australia, and the U.S., earned multi-platinum certification in the last two territories, and secured the Grammy for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical that year.
Afterward he received remix assignments from Miley Cyrus, David Guetta, and Kelly Clarkson, among others, and joined Guetta and vocalist Chris Willis on a new version of Charles & Eddie's "Would I Lie to You?" Output tapered somewhat during 2020 and 2021, yet Gervais maintained a balance between remixes and fresh productions before returning to a heavier release schedule in 2022 that included the singles "Hype," "Only One Night," and "Blue."
