Emerging as a Latino R&B and reggae vocalist in 1997, Flex navigated mixtape circuits for several years before establishing an independent identity in 2008 through the breakout album Te Quiero. His earliest recording credit came on the compilation De Censura, Vol. 1, where he paired with Toby King for the duet “Como Puedo Cantar,” a track that resonated locally yet failed to generate broader momentum. In 2000 reggae producer Celia Torres identified the singer and arranged his appearance on the mix disc Las Propias 2000; sharing vocals with Duende on “Dejala,” Flex reached audiences across Latin America, with notable airplay in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador. A further project with Torres yielded the tender tribute “La Balada de Flex,” written for his late mother and timed to coincide with regional Mother’s Day observances; the ballad quickly became an urban anthem embraced by Latina mothers. Success prompted repeated invitations for collaborations and mixtape features, among them the 2003 collection Triple X, which topped sales charts in Ecuador and supported more than 40 live dates driven by the artist’s Ecuadorian following. Mounting popularity underscored the demand for a solo release, leading Flex to assemble and compose material from 2006 onward. That preparation bore fruit with the 2008 arrival of Te Quiero, which entered Billboard’s Top 200 and reached number five on the Top Latin Albums chart.
