Originating from Stockton, Missouri, the adult-alternative pop/rock outfit Flick was guided by brothers Oran and Trevor Thornton. Music became a refuge for the siblings after they lost their older brother Brad in a car accident during childhood. Oran launched the band Johnny Q. Public at age 14 and toured with the group while also contributing to DC Talk sessions. Meanwhile Trevor pursued a solo path and occasionally supported Johnny Q. Public during its Springfield engagements, backed by various members of that act. The brothers later performed together as an acoustic duo in the Springfield area before assembling a complete lineup under the name Flick, bringing in bassist Eve Hill from the local group Sweaty Betty and selecting drummer Paul Adam McGrath following auditions.

Flick debuted onstage in December 1996. By spring 1997 the band had cut an EP with producer Joe Baldridge, whom Oran had first encountered during his Johnny Q. Public tenure. Originally titled Booger and later renamed Flick, the EP was sold at local performances and helped the quartet land a deal with Columbia Records. Soon afterward the group shared bills with the Cardigans, Duncan Sheik, and Meredith Brooks.

In summer 1998 Flick issued its first full-length album, The Perfect Kellulight.
