Emerging initially as a quintet that fused metal with punk, Haste distinguished itself early on within Birmingham, Alabama. Formed in 1995, the group soon shared stages with larger acts including Stuck Mojo, New Bomb Turks, and Turmoil before undergoing several personnel shifts. The lineup eventually stabilized around Jason Burns on guitar, Nick Brunson also handling guitars, Brandon Thrasher on bass, Jeff Gardner behind the drums, and dual vocalists Kelly Reaves and Chris Mosley. After four years of work, the band issued its debut full-length, Pursuit in the Face of Consequence, via Century Media in 1999, a set that featured covers of Lionel Richie alongside an acoustic rendition of a Slayer track. When Reason Sleeps arrived in early 2001, followed by The Mercury Lift in 2003. Touring alongside As I Lay Dying, Hopesfall, and Stretch Armstrong supported the latter release until Reaves exited late that year; rather than recruit a new singer, Mosley assumed every vocal responsibility thereafter. Century Media parted ways with the band in mid-2005, prompting an extended hiatus that culminated in an official dissolution announcement during early 2007.
