Biography
House Gospel Choir operates as a London collective that draws together more than one hundred vocalists, instrumentalists, DJs, and producers from varied backgrounds. The ensemble delivers energetic, spiritually charged interpretations of house, garage, and gospel repertoire, highlighting the shared, transcendent dimensions of club culture and dancefloor rituals. Its first studio album, Re//Choired, arrived in 2020 and showcased work with house pioneer Todd Terry alongside reworkings of material by Candi Staton, Crystal Waters, and Disclosure. Subsequent releases paired the group with Marshall Jefferson and Oliver Heldens before the 2024 follow-up Love Is the Message appeared.
Vocalist and producer Natalie Maddix first floated the notion of forming a house choir through an informal online message. After an initial 2014 rehearsal in Hackney, East London, the fledgling outfit secured a slot at Glastonbury; within months the roster had expanded beyond thirty singers and players, who tackled numbers such as Barbara Tucker’s “Beautiful People” and Kirk Franklin’s “Up Above My Head.” The collective instituted a monthly public Mass Choir event and began appearing at clubs and festivals, later extending its reach to Singapore, Australia, Denmark, and Ibiza. Additional credits include supporting Loyle Carner and Emeli Sandé on television broadcasts and contributing to recordings by Boy George & Culture Club, Zak Abel, and HONNE.
The choir’s first single, “Deeper,” emerged in 2017 with Riton and MNEK, followed in 2018 by a version of Wookie’s “Battle” helmed by the UK garage originator. “Salvation,” a 2019 collaboration with Adelphi Music Factory, preceded several further tracks that fed into Re//Choired, among them the Todd Terry joint “My Zulu,” a reading of Disclosure’s “Latch,” and “Gypsy Woman (Place to Stay),” which reworks Crystal Waters while weaving in elements of Technotronic’s “Pump Up the Jam.” The album peaked at number four on the UK Christian & Gospel Albums chart. House Gospel Choir also joined Kylie Minogue for her virtual concert Infinite Disco.
Blinkie’s 2021 track “Stronger” featured the ensemble, as did Ella Henderson and Just Kiddin’s “Risk It All,” which entered the UK Top 100. The same year brought a guest spot on Duane Harden’s update of his Armand Van Helden classic “You Don’t Know Me.” In 2022 the choir appeared alongside Nile Rodgers on Oliver Heldens’ cover of KISS’s “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” and joined Rudimental on Marshall Jefferson’s “FWD,” while also performing at John Cale’s eightieth-birthday concert and the BBC One New Year’s Eve special. Further 2023 activity included a turn on Shouse’s “Your Love” and the single “Angels” with MORGAN; 2024 saw “Save Me” with Kaleena Zanders and “Weekend Love” with Will Clarke surface ahead of Love Is the Message, which enlisted Joe Smooth, Janice Robinson, and Beverley Knight among its guests.
