Biography
Contemporary gospel finds an innovative voice in Janice Gaines, whose style draws from longstanding gospel conventions while incorporating elements of sophisticated R&B and mainstream pop broadcasts. Her origins trace to St. Louis, Missouri, with her upbringing occurring in Memphis, Tennessee, where church singing formed an early foundation, followed by participation in a high school ensemble and prior involvement in a gospel choir. During her pursuit of an economics degree at Oberlin College, musical ties persisted through background vocal contributions alongside Howard Hewett. After completing studies at Oberlin, she obtained a Master of Divinity from Ashland Theological Seminary and subsequently instructed seventh-grade mathematics in the Bronx. An eventual return to music directed her to Nashville, Tennessee, involving session work alongside various Christian and gospel performers in addition to jazz bassist Nathan East. Backed by her spouse and manager E.J. Gaines, she secured a deal with Motown Gospel. Her contribution to the 2014 Motown Christmas collection featured a duet with Kem titled "Bethlehem." Greatest Life Ever arrived the next year as a concise release comprising tracks she co-authored and which LaShawn Daniels—known for work with Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Tamar Braxton—produced.
