Like her idol Taylor Swift, Jillian Rossi draws songwriting and vocal performances from her own romantic history. That confessional approach attracted notice from both everyday listeners and high-profile figures, producing consecutive viral breakthroughs via the 2021 singles “Fever Dream” and “Give Me a Reason” ahead of her first full-length release, Never Fully Loved (2023).

Rossi grew up on Long Island, New York, where she passed childhood and teenage years by composing original material along with sincere parodies. During adolescence one of those originals reached fellow Long Islander and pop legend Billy Joel, who offered encouragement by likening her to Swift. At Berklee College of Music she interpreted material by pop belters such as Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, and Kesha while refining a songwriting approach she later labeled “banthems”: intimate ballad lyrics paired with heightened dramatic vocals.

Following the path of many emerging vocalists, Rossi placed self-released originals on streaming platforms alongside clips of covers she posted online, and those originals began accumulating substantial plays. The 2020 track “So What,” a sincere tribute to embracing a partner’s imperfections, surpassed millions of streams. The following year “Fever Dream” and “Give Me a Reason” connected even more strongly, prompting online reactions from Paris Hilton and Shaquille O’Neal.

Both singles portray unsuccessful relationships that resonate with audiences, their specifics prompting fans to speculate about the identities of those who hurt Rossi. She extended that motif through the title and artwork of Never Fully Loved—shortened to “NFL”—whose cover shows her on bleachers holding a football. Rossi sustained the theme beyond football season by joining Madison Beer as support on a 2024 European tour.
