Based in Dallas, Texas, the regional Mexican ensemble La Energía Norteña specializes in romantic norteño arrangements that spotlight both accordion and saxophone, a combination long favored throughout the Mexican states of Chihuahua and San Luis Potosí. The group came together in 2010 and spent its first year performing at weddings and quinceañeras. A local talent contest victory in 2011 opened the door to their first commercially released single, “Te Recordare,” which appeared on Fonovisia’s Azteca Records imprint. While continuing to work state, county, and city fairs along with weddings and private events, the musicians issued additional singles and videos and placed tracks on multi-artist compilations, steadily enlarging their audience.

Azteca issued the band’s debut album, Sin Restricciones, in 2013. Although the project failed to register on the charts, it earned considerable radio exposure and led to a televised live unplugged performance. Their follow-up, the 2014 album Cruzando Territorio, climbed to number five on the Top Latin Albums chart. As a result, La Energía Norteña expanded its touring circuit across the American Southwest and into northern Mexico, attracting progressively larger crowds.

The pre-release single “Me Dejaste Solo,” issued in July 2015, rose into the Top 30 of the Mexican Regional Songs chart; the full album El Rompecabezas soon followed, yielding another charting track in “Malditos Sentimientos,” reaching the number-two position on the Mexican Regional Albums chart, and earning a Latin Grammy nomination. The musicians maintained an almost nonstop touring pace until returning to the studio in spring 2016. “Hoy Ma Tocer Pender” surfaced as a pre-release single in August, and No Hay Quinto Malo arrived in late October. Throughout 2017 the group resumed its demanding schedule and contributed to the compilations 12 Romanticas con Sax, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Before the year ended, a YouTube video captured a live street performance of the title track from El Sueño Americano. In March the official single “Despedida de Soltera” was released and peaked at number 28 on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. The band crisscrossed North America in advance of the album’s arrival. On April 4, two days prior to the release of El Sueño Americano, thieves took the group’s equipment from a trailer parked in Dallas, Texas.
