Biography
Emerging among the leading norteño acts of the new millennium in the aftermath of groups including Texas' Los Rieleros del Norte, La Maquinaria Norteña built a sound featuring saxophone, accordion, drums, electric bass, and vocals that extends the Mexican Regional lineage, above all Chihuahua's northern variant. Early releases such as their self-titled 2006 debut solidified their standing as a spirited, audience-engaging ensemble equally adept at polkas, traditional numbers, and narcocorridos. Con Mil Caballos de Fuerza from 2013 ascended the Mexican Regional charts, while 2017's Por Obvias Razones entered the overall Top 200 and was succeeded there by the 2018 Desde del Rancho EP. August 2022 brought the band's first number one when "50 y Cincuenta" from the Al Derecho y Al Reverso EP reached the summit; "Eres Algo," also taken from that project, duplicated the feat the following February.
Polo Urias, formerly of Los Rieleros, founded the band in Roswell, New Mexico in 1994 alongside saxophonist Keith Nieto, percussionist Erick Urias, accordionist/keyboardist Jimmy Torres, and drummer Aarón Urias. Signing to Fonovisa the same year, they debuted with Polo Urias y Su Máquina Norteña. Their approach is routinely likened to Los Rieleros for its hardcore norteño character—raw, romantic, and untouched by Latin pop gloss. Nieto parted from Urias in 2006 to assemble his own La Maquinaria Norteña lineup with brothers Rory on accordion and Tony on drums, vocalist Sergio "Fly" Soto (ex-Los Braveros de Peñas), bassist Ivan Gutierrez, and electric guitarist Randy Perez. The self-titled Fonovisa debut arrived in 2007, followed by No Existen Barreras in 2008 and La Nueva Era in 2009. After heavy touring and a bus crash that nearly proved fatal, the group paused and briefly rejoined Urias; their fourth album, Vive en Mi, appeared in late 2013 and became their highest-charting release to that point by entering the regional Mexican chart inside the Top Ten. El Fenómeno followed the next year with elevated production values, further boosting their touring profile through shared stages with Rene Camacho's La Arrolladora Banda El Limón and others while charting beyond the Mexican Regional genre for the first time.
La Maquinaria Norteña issued the single "Para Que Amarte" in summer 2015, which rose inside the Mexican Regional Top Ten and was succeeded by "Corazón Herido," "Qué Haré Sin Ti," and "Qué Tiene Él." Ya Dime Adiós arrived that fall, and 2016's Generacion Maquinaria Est. 2006 debuted at number one on the Latin chart the next summer. A year later the band collaborated with Energia Nortena on the compilations 12 Romanticas con Sax, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, then released the new studio set Por Obvias Razones in October, which reached number 17 on Top Latin Albums and number seven on Mexican Regional albums; its singles, among them "Como Olvidarte" and the title track, have exceeded a million streams each. Amo surfaced in 2018 and climbed to number three on the Mexican Regional chart. Until the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted their schedule, the group toured without pause, yielding On Tour 2020 and the En Las Buenas y En Las Malas EP. April 2021 saw the 15 Aniversario compilation reach the Top Five on Mexican Regional Albums, followed by the digital Mas Especial in February. December brought the single "Eres Ese Algo," which charted in six countries, amassed over twenty million streams, and secured their first radio number one; it closed the Al Derecho y al Reverso EP. In February 2023 the follow-up single "Eres Algo" also topped the Mexican Regional chart.
