Biography
Fronted by sisters Vicky and Marisol Terrazas, Chicago’s los Horóscopos de Durango introduced a female viewpoint to duranguense, a role parallel to the one Jenni Rivera and Yolanda “La Potranquita” Pérez played for Sinaloan banda in the historically male-dominated realm of regional Mexican music. The style itself blends elements of banda while relying on fewer horns, heavier keyboard layers, and sharper percussion; despite intense competition across Mexico and the United States, the award-winning ensemble consistently distinguished itself. In the 2000s the group emerged as one of duranguense’s top-selling acts, propelled by the sisters’ forthright presence. Their 2004 album Puras de Rompe y Rasga earned multiple Billboard Music Awards, while 2008’s Desatados captured a Latin Grammy for Banda Album of the Year and the band also received a Lo Nuestro trophy for Best Artist that same year. Critics on both sides of the border praised 2010’s La Guera y La Morena; the 2013 single “Nos Acostumbramos” amassed more than seventeen million views, and its parent album Las Chicas Malas registered across Latin American charts. The act maintains an extensive touring schedule throughout the Americas. In 2016 they joined Edwin Luna y La Trakalosa de Monterrey on the single “Diselo Tiu,” whose video helped Vivir en Pecado reach gold status.
The Terrazas sisters did not originate the band. Their father, Armando Terrazas, formed the original lineup in Chicago in 1975, drawing on the city’s sizable Mexican-American community. The name los Horóscopos de Durango references Durango, Mexico, and the group functioned locally long before wider recognition. Under Armando’s direction the roster shifted repeatedly; although early configurations featured male personnel, he eventually repositioned Vicky on vocals and trumpet alongside Marisol on vocals, accordion, keyboards, and sax, a decision that yielded strong commercial returns. After signing with Disa Records in the 2000s, the revamped lineup sent albums and singles up the Latin charts, including their 2004 version of “Dos Locos,” first recorded by Dominican bachata duo Monchy & Alexandra. Armando remained the sole link to the 1975 roster, as most later members were not yet born at that time. The 2005 release Y Seguimos con Duranguense ignited charts and secured another Billboard Music Award, while Locos de Amor earned multiple Latin Grammy and Lo Nuestro nominations plus platinum certification. Desatados claimed a Latin Grammy in 2007, and Ayer, Hoy y Siempre’s success led to a further win for Best Artist of the Year in 2009. Late in 2010 the group briefly adopted the name la Guera y la Morena de los Horóscopos de Durango to launch their initial banda single “Considera Que Te Amo,” followed by “No Me Dejes con las Ganas.” Closing 2011, they recorded the duet “5 Minutos” with Gloria Trevi, which charted throughout Latin America. After a 2012 cover of the folk song “La Mosca” alongside Chuy Lizárraga, they issued the covers collection Viejitas Pero Buenas Para Pistear. The 2014 album Chicas Malas produced the charting singles “Dejame Amarte” and the title track, placing inside the Top 20 on Mexican Regional digital charts; a third single, “Nos Acostumbramos,” reached the Top 15 for a month and drove gold certification. The band maintained relentless touring, filling U.S. theaters and larger Mexican venues.
Following a three-month hiatus, they returned to the studio, this time in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, guided by arranger and producer Adrián Tostado (“El Tesoro”). They recruited material from songwriters including Horacio Palencia, Joss Favela, Espinoza Paz, Omar Tarazón, Luciano Luna, and José Juan Segura. The Paz-penned promotional single “Estoy con Otro en la Cama” appeared in summer 2015; its video exceeded seven million views within the first month and the track entered the streaming Top 20. The resulting album Vivir en Pecado drew attention for its provocative tone yet enjoyed broad popularity. Later that year the non-album collaboration “Díselo Tu” with Edwin Luna y La Trakalosa de Monterrey became their highest-charting video. The ensemble toured behind Vivir en Pecado for two-and-a-half years, issuing five of its tracks as charting singles. After another pause they re-entered the studio in 2018 to record Entre el Amor y la Aventura, co-produced by Armando and Vicky Terrazas and featuring songs by Salvador Aponte, Luciano Luna, José Alfredo Jiménez, Manuel Acuña, and additional writers. Released in November, the set began quietly, yet the single “Me Dejé Querer” gained traction at streaming and radio throughout the following year.
