Distinguished by both their early age and their geographic base—one of the rare duranguense ensembles to achieve traction without relying on a Chicago foundation—Los Primos de Durango have charted an unconventional path to prominence inside Regional Mexican music. The nine-piece outfit surfaced in 2003 amid the broader surge of duranguense acts, drawing its entire roster from Vicente Guerrero, Durango. At the time the lineup locked into place, several participants were still teenagers. The members included Javier Eduardo Vargas Amaya on vocals, Arturo Manuel Vargas Rios on vocals, Jesús Fernando Vargas Rios on sax, Luis Enrique Vargas Rios on keyboard, Arturo Manuel Vargas Dueñes on sax, Felipe de Jesús Herrera Ramirez on drums, Eduardo Vargas Dueñes on keyboard, Francisco Javier Vargas Dueñes on keyboard and tuba, and Now Serrano Domínguez on percusión. Prior to issuing any recordings, the musicians played locally and accumulated numerous television spots. Their first album, Nostalgia Duranguense, arrived in 2003 and spotlighted the single “Tocando Fondo.” Although the project resonated with an existing audience, it failed to broaden the group’s reach significantly. National visibility arrived only with the follow-up Tal Vez, which earned nominations for “Revelación del Año” and “Grupo Duranguense del Año” at the Premios Furia Musical. Bolstered by radio traction for “Tocando Fondo,” Los Primos de Durango began receiving bookings across Mexico in locales such as Leon, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi and beyond. Subsequent singles—“Voy a Converncerte,” “Tal Vez,” and the 2007 track “Y Tu Te Vas”—registered on international airplay tallies and registered on multiple Billboard charts.
