Biography
After receiving his initial piano at age six, Italian singer/songwriter Marco Masini launched into formal studies and made his first public appearance at eleven by joining a neighborhood orchestra before later performing with the ensemble Errata Corrige. During the 1980s he relocated to Modena, where employment as a DJ sparked a deeper fascination with vocal performance and composition. Following his piano work alongside Humberto Tozzi, Masini’s song “Disperato” captured top honors at the Sanremo Festival, prompting the swift release of his self-titled debut album and, one year afterward, Malinconoia, whose brooding tone nevertheless propelled it to major success across Italy.
In early 1993 the artist embarked on his inaugural European tour; during a pause he captured his genuine breakthrough, T’innamorerai. Although radio outlets refused its lead single “Vaffanculo,” the ensuing publicity elevated Masini’s profile considerably. He rapidly cemented his reputation as a distinctive vocalist through an acrobatic technique spanning multiple octaves, merging classical, rock, and blues elements whose live presentations soon registered on charts throughout Europe. The 1995 album Il Cielo della Vergine reached number one in Italy, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, while its contentious singles “Bella Stronza” and “Principessa” faced Italian radio boycotts yet still climbed the charts.
After touring, Masini withdrew for a period before resurfacing in 1998 with Scimmie on the Ma Records imprint he had co-established with Marco Poggione; the record’s overt nods to 1970s rock failed to resonate commercially. Regrouping, he delivered Raccontami Di Te in 2000, restoring the melodic and stylistic blend of his earliest work and securing a top-ten placement in Italy along with a triumphant domestic tour. In 2002 he mounted another series of concerts featuring his freshly assembled backing band Anima.
Masini’s 2005 Sanremo Festival entry earned dual victories in both its electric and acoustic renditions. He followed with a greatest-hits collection that included fresh interpretations of older material plus several new tracks, then issued the album Il Giardino Delle Api containing both versions of his Sanremo-winning song. A year later he collaborated with singer and songwriter Umberto Tozzi on the project Tozzi Masini, whose single “Come si fa…?” successfully blended bagpipe textures with dance rhythms. Extensive touring occupied the subsequent years, yet Masini still created the theatrical production Il Brutto Anatroccolo, weaving his own compositions into an autobiographical narrative.
After presenting the bold and reflective “L’Italia” at the 2009 Sanremo Festival, he released L’Italia… e Altre Storie. Niente Di Importante arrived in 2011, accompanied by a worldwide tour and an extended hiatus that prompted retirement speculation. Emerging from prolonged seclusion revitalized, Masini signed with Sony Music, unveiled the single “Spostato Di Un Secondo” in February 2017, performed the title track at the Sanremo Festival, and saw the resulting album enter the Italian charts at number six.
