Born in Pavia, Italy, in 1967, Massimo Pezzali encountered Mauro Repetto during their high school years, and shared musical preferences quickly turned the pair into close friends. A 1988 journey to the United States brought Pezzali back with a synthesizer in hand, prompting him and Repetto to start composing material together. Their demo reached Italian radio and opened the door to a spot on the television program 1,2,3 Jovanotti. Performing as 883, the duo issued three albums before Repetto chose an acting path, prompting Pezzali to rebuild the project around a fresh ensemble of younger players. Subsequent releases earned the group widespread recognition both at home and abroad, culminating in the final studio album Uno in Piu' in 2001.

Now focused on a solo trajectory, Pezzali delivered his first individual effort, Il Mondo Insieme a Te, in 2004. The following year he unveiled Tutto Max, a retrospective collection spanning his 883 era through his early solo recordings, accompanied by a DVD and live dates. His second solo album, Time Out, arrived in 2007 and earned platinum certification, while 2008 saw the publication of his debut novel, Per prendersi una vita. Early in 2011 he premiered the single “Il mio secondo tempo,” setting the stage for the full-length Terraferma later that year. The 2012 project Hanno ucciso l'uomo ragno 2012 reworked 883’s 1992 debut, with Pezzali revisiting every track alongside leading Italian rappers. Max 20 followed in 2013, gathering major hits alongside five new compositions, one of which was the single “L’universo tranne noi.” Another studio album, Astronave Max, appeared in 2015.
