Biography
Megan Moroney projects an upbeat personality that conceals her sharp songwriting talent, a quality evident in the 2022 breakout track “Tennessee Orange” and the album Lucky that followed. Her 2023 debut recording blended time-honored country narrative devices—she handles upbeat two-step rhythms as comfortably as introspective tales—with modern pop instincts and present-day attitudes, landing inside the country-chart Top Ten. She surpassed that achievement the next year when her sophomore effort, Am I Okay?, climbed to number nine on the Billboard 200.
A native of Georgia born in 1997, Moroney absorbed classic country, Southern rock, and Americana songcraft from relatives during childhood, while also studying piano and harmonizing with her father. In her first year at the University of Georgia she landed an opening slot for Chase Rice at Athens’ Georgia Theatre, prompting her to compose the original number “Stay a Memory” that she delivered onstage that night. After the semester ended she informed her parents of her desire to relocate to Nashville, yet they urged her to finish her music-business degree first. While still enrolled she interned for Sugarland’s Kristian Bush; the two remained in contact and she moved to Nashville in 2020 once she graduated.
She issued the self-written single “Wonder” in 2021, after which Bush set up her initial Nashville co-writing appointment with Ben Williams, whose contributions figure prominently on her Sony debut, the July 2022 EP Pistol Made of Roses. Bush later helmed the affectionate ballad “Tennessee Orange,” credited to Moroney, Williams, David Fanning, and Paul Jenkins and released in September 2022 to coincide with college football season. Although earlier cuts such as “Hair Salon” from the EP had already gathered several million streams, “Tennessee Orange” generated tens of millions, entered the Billboard Hot 100, and ultimately peaked at number 38 while reaching number ten on Hot Country Songs; the song also earned two CMT Music Award nominations—for Breakthrough Female Video and Digital-First Performance of the Year—and secured opening gigs for Larry Fleet and Chase Matthew. Early in 2023 she released “I’m Not Pretty,” launched her first headlining tour, and supported Brooks & Dunn. Her full-length debut, Lucky, appeared on Columbia in May 2023 under Bush’s production and bowed at number 38 on the Billboard 200 while entering the country Top Ten. Later that year she teamed with Old Dominion for “Can’t Break Up Now,” then began the cycle for her next album with the lead single “No Caller ID” in early 2024. Once again working with Bush, Moroney co-wrote every track on the twelve-song Am I Okay?, among them the pointed closer “Indifferent.” Issued in July 2024, the set outperformed its predecessor, climbing to number three on the country chart and reaching the Billboard 200 Top Ten.
