Canada’s Obey the Brave surfaced in 2012, their ascent unfolding with a velocity rivaling the intensity of their own sound—a fusion of punishing extreme metal and thrash alongside cathartic melodic hardcore. Hailing from Ottawa and Montreal, the lineup includes ex-Despised Icon singer Alex Erian handling vocals, alongside bassist Miguel Lepage, guitarists John Campbell and Greg Wood, and drummer Stevie Morotti. Midway through 2012 the group secured a deal with the storied hardcore imprint Epitaph, issuing its debut album Young Blood that August. The follow-up, Salvation, landed in 2014 and sharpened the band’s already unyielding sonic force. On the third release, 2017’s Mad Season, Obey the Brave expanded its palette through a featured appearance by French-Canadian rap group Loud Lary Ajust. Returning to its hardcore and metal foundations, the band delivered the aptly titled Balance in 2019 under the guidance of producer Paul Marc Rousseau.
