Emerging from Chicago’s thriving pop-punk community in the early 2000s, the piano-driven five-piece October Fall first assembled during summer 2003. Vocalist and guitarist Pat D’Andrea joined forces with guitarist Clark Harrison, initially calling their project Silver Lining. The pair soon settled on the name October Fall and completed the lineup by bringing aboard drummer Nick Scalise, pianist Owen Toomey, and bassist Greg Shanahan. Local shows steadily attracted larger audiences, eventually drawing the notice of hometown musician Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy, who signed the group to his Decaydance imprint through Fueled by Ramen. After supporting Ashlee Simpson on the road, the band entered the studio to cut its debut album in summer 2005. The following winter found them sharing bills with the Click Five, and in February 2006 the finished record, A Season in Hell, appeared; the title served as a nod to the film Eddie and the Cruisers, a childhood favorite of D’Andrea. Spring dates alongside the Veronicas and Fall Out Boy kept the musicians on the road, although Toomey departed the group by early summer.
