Peter Furler, an Australian who has worked as a musician, songwriter, singer, producer, and record-label owner and executive, has built a career around an alternative pop and rock style that strongly evokes the 1980s. He has done so largely on the more adventurous wing of the contemporary Christian world, above all through the band Newsboys, which he helped start and which ruled the Christian pop charts throughout the 1990s. Born on September 8, 1966, in McLaren Vale, South Australia, to parents who served as Christian missionaries, Furler carried the beliefs of his upbringing into his professional life, where they supplied both subject matter and a steady point of reference. Together with George Perdikis, Sean Taylor, and John James he launched Newsboys; in the band’s earliest lineup he played drums while also handling most of the songwriting and production. When John James departed in 1997, Furler moved to the front of the stage as lead vocalist. The group enjoyed major success by showing how a praise-and-worship rock outfit could reach listeners outside its core audience while keeping its spiritual purpose intact. In 1999 Furler joined fellow Australians Dale Bray and Wes Campbell in establishing Inpop Records, where he continued to work as both producer and executive. He began reducing his involvement with Newsboys around 2009, and by 2010 he had shifted focus to solo work. His first album under his own name, On Fire, was released by Sparrow Records in spring 2011.
