Biography
Sheff G fuses elements of Chicago and U.K. drill into his personal lyrical approach, establishing himself as a foundational presence within New York’s drill movement. The track “No Suburban” quickly emerged as one of the style’s first major successes, propelling him toward widespread recognition and extending the sound’s reach worldwide through installments in his Panic series of singles. He refined his approach across subsequent projects, including the 2019 release The Unluccy Luccy Kid and Proud of Myself, which appeared in 2024.
Raised in Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood, Michael Williams, known professionally as Sheff G, turned to rap after absorbing Chicago’s influential drill scene. Having participated in local gang activity during his youth, Williams composed his debut single, “No Suburban,” during a period of probation that followed an incident in which he discharged a firearm inside a neighborhood mall. His initial recordings brought a Brooklyn-specific identity to the rhythmic patterns and beats characteristic of U.K. drill, with “No Suburban” serving as a clear illustration. As one of Brooklyn drill’s first breakout records, the song accumulated millions of streams and elevated Sheff G to neighborhood prominence. After stepping away from music at the start of 2018, he reemerged in April with “Panic, Pt. 2,” which attracted a substantial audience in Britain once U.K. drill video platforms began circulating it.
While the broader scene gained traction across 2018 and 2019, Sheff G sustained a steady flow of singles, issuing the next two chapters of the Panic series alongside trap-leaning cuts such as “We Getting Money.” His first mixtape, The Unluccy Luccy Kid, expanded his range by incorporating drill-infused numbers like “Menace” and “Automatic” alongside the playful, carnival-tinged trap of “All My Life” and the understated Dreamville-inspired tone of “Flows.” The project featured seven appearances by recurring partner Sleepy Hallow as well as a guest verse from Sacramento rapper Mozzy and arrived in September 2019. A second album, One and Only, followed in May 2020 with a noticeably restrained atmosphere and beats supplied by longtime associate Great John. Later that year he delivered the mixtape Proud of Me Now in December, closing out the calendar with tracks such as “Light On” and “No Negotiations.” Additional singles appeared throughout 2021, among them “On Go” with Polo G and “Run It Up” alongside Sleepy Hallow and A Boogie Wit da Hoodie. After his arrest in July 2021 on weapons charges, Sheff G entered a guilty plea and received a two-year prison term. He issued From the Can in 2022 while incarcerated. Upon his release from custody he returned with Proud of Myself at the end of 2024.
