Biography
Stephen Puth first drew notice through his dusky, romantic pop sound when the groove-oriented single "Sexual Vibe" appeared in 2018. Before that release, the younger brother of singer Charlie Puth had already written material for several other acts, among them Daniel Skye, PrettyMuch, and the Vamps. A follow-up track, "Half Gone," surfaced the next year.
Puth entered the world in 1994 and spent his childhood in Rumson, New Jersey, with two siblings, one of whom was singer Charlie Puth. Classical piano lessons from his mother led all the children to take up instruments. By seventh grade he had started teaching himself guitar after discovering the work of singer-songwriters such as Van Morrison, James Taylor, and Bill Withers. Although music remained central to him, he majored in history at college and later took a job in finance, continuing to write songs on the side. Around 2016 he moved to Los Angeles and began an internship at a record label. That position quickly led to writing assignments for the Vamps, Rozes, Prince Fox, and additional artists. Arista Records executive David Massey eventually noticed his work and offered him a recording contract. In 2018 Puth issued his first solo single, the '60s R&B-inflected "Sexual Vibe."
