Frontman Michael Tait of DC Talk traces the origins of his band Tait to 1996, the year he first encountered drummer Chad Chapin. Their initial collaboration featured a rendition of "Curious George" alongside numerous Pearl Jam songs. This meeting prompted the formation of Tait, which soon incorporated guitarist Pete Stewart, previously of Grammatrain, and bassist Lonnie Chapin, formerly with Petra. The ensemble takes its name from Michael Tait’s deceased father. Regarding the group’s purpose, Michael Tait expresses, "...ultimately I hope and pray [people] see the Gospel... People look for so many other ways to fill the emptiness in their lives, and there's just no way to do it besides Christ." Their sound fuses contemporary rock, pop, funk, soul, and R&B elements, with Michael Tait characterizing the outfit as "guitar-toting, drum-slinging rockers." Ahead of issuing their debut album Empty in 2001, the band showcased material from the record in various international locations, such as Amsterdam.
