From their Michoacan origins, the regional Mexican outfit Tierra Cali stands among the style’s rare family ensembles, built around the five Plancarte brothers: Humberto on lead vocals and keyboards, Rafael on bass, Cruz on percussion, Arcadio on keyboards, and Efrain on drums. The siblings first took the stage in their hometown of Uruapan, where local audiences embraced them almost immediately and word spread rapidly across the surrounding countryside. Their earliest sides for Discos Ciudad featured “No Pares,” the single “La Milpa,” “El Arroyito” from 2003, and “El Pescado Nadador” from 2004. Bolstered by this growing regional profile, the group scheduled its initial shows outside Mexico—in Georgia, Washington, Texas, and California—once the album Alegria Calentana appeared.

In 2006 Tierra Cali moved to the Lideres imprint for its debut self-titled collection, then signed with Universal Latino’s Vene Music the following year. Under the new deal the band issued Enamorado de Ti in 2007 and reached its widest audience yet. Although steady touring had already cultivated a loyal following, the act had yet to register on any major chart until the title track climbed to number 15 on Billboard’s regional Mexican tally in both Mexico and the United States. Between the 2008 album Mas Alla de la Distancia and the 2011 release Un Siglo de Amor, four Tierra Cali projects entered the Billboard Top 200 while also landing inside the Top 20 on the Top Latin Albums and Mexican Regional charts. Their singles dominated airwaves throughout Mexico, the U.S., and parts of South America, and the accompanying videos accumulated millions of streams.

The 2012 album Entregate simultaneously topped the Latin Albums and Mexican Regional charts and earned platinum certification. In 2013, reissues of Mas Alla de la Distancia, Si Tu Te Vas, and Maldito Amor all appeared on year-end Top Latin Albums lists and achieved either gold or platinum status. Continued road work further confirmed the band’s widespread appeal. The 2015 set #Hashtag y Lo Mas Trending reached number six on the Mexican Regional Albums chart. A year later the group unveiled a video for “Se Está Acabando el Amor ft. Banda Troyana”; its strong reception prompted a digital-single release in May 2017 that charted in several territories and served as advance promotion for the next full-length project.
