Biography
Hailing from New York, Alex Mali works as a singer and songwriter whose atmospheric, artistic take on alternative R&B took shape with the 2016 viral single “Phenom.” A Brooklyn native raised in a Caribbean-American home by a Jamaican mother and Trinidadian father, she pursued several years of jazz studies at college after high school. During that time she began capturing tracks on a laptop inside her dorm room. In 2014 she released the woozy doo-wop electronica cut “Is It Love,” produced by Afrokeys. The experience prompted her to leave school and devote herself to music. Additional tracks appeared, and in 2016 the Monte Booker-produced “Phenom” spread widely while gaining rotation on BBC1 Radio. A year later came the follow-up single “Hoity Toity,” produced by Nine-Ease and featuring MeLo-X. In 2019 she issued her debut EP, Sweet & Sour, which contained the PLVYHAUS-produced “Benjamin” along with the Thutmose collaboration “Faded.”
