Biography
Bloodlined Calligraphy stands out among metalcore acts as a thrash-oriented ensemble fronted by a woman who handles the guttural Cookie Monster-style vocals rather than relying on the conventional male growl. The group essentially grew out of an earlier metalcore outfit called Friction, which originated in Ypsilanti, Michigan, during 1998. Although Friction had begun attracting a steady audience, repeated personnel shifts kept stalling their progress. After yet another wave of departures emptied the ranks in early 2002, bassist Eric Cargile and drummer Matt Carter recruited guitarist Ryan Hampton, initially aiming to rebuild Friction. Once vocalist Matthew Fleming came aboard, however, the musicians opted for a fresh identity, renaming themselves Bloodlined Calligraphy to reflect both their distinct sound and shared Christian convictions. They secured a deal with the CCM-focused indie Selah Records and issued their first full-length, Say Hi to the Bad Guy, during autumn 2002. When Fleming proved unavailable for live work, he departed on good terms and Ally French stepped in as the new frontwoman; around the same time, second guitarist Shawn Williams joined the lineup. In 2003 the band moved to the more prominent alternative Christian label Facedown Records, releasing the EP The Beginning of the End in 2004 before achieving wider recognition with the 2005 album They Want You Silent. Following the autumn 2006 arrival of their third record, Ypsilanti, Matt Carter exited to attend to family obligations and Robbie Coran took over on drums. In a notably abrupt move, Ally French informed the others of her departure by text message on the eve of a planned six-week tour; temporary vocalists helped finish the dates. By November 2006, Ellen Hoffman had been named the group’s permanent lead singer.
