Biography
Citizen Zero formed as a Detroit-based modern rock quartet whose propulsive sound fuses straightforward, roots-oriented rock & roll with expansive alternative and post-grunge textures, prompting listeners to note resemblances to Stone Temple Pilots, Theory of a Deadman, and Kings of Leon. After extensive road work and a devastating loss, the group released its first full-length album, State of Mind, in 2016.
The ensemble originated in Rochester Hills in 2010 when brothers Greg Dudley on bass, John Dudley on drums, and Matt Dudley on guitar joined forces with singer Josh Mayle. Recording engineer Al Sutton, known for his work with Kid Rock, Detroit Cobras, and Uncle Kracker, quickly took notice and brought the band into Rustbelt Studios to capture their self-titled 2011 debut EP. The following year brought profound hardship when Matt Dudley passed away, leaving the remaining members at a decisive turning point. They elected to continue, recruiting technically gifted guitarist Sammy Boller and returning to the studio to complete their second EP, Life Explodes, issued in 2012. Subsequent high-visibility performances with Kid Rock, ZZ Top, Halestorm, Royal Blood, and Highly Suspect helped raise their profile, and in 2013 Citizen Zero received a Detroit Music Award in the Outstanding Rock/Pop Recording category. Bassist Greg Dudley departed in 2015; Sam Collins assumed the role.
Later that same year the quartet signed with Wind-Up Records and delivered the long-awaited studio album State of Mind. Two tracks from the record, “Go (Let Me Save You)” and “Lure and Persuade,” each reached the U.S. Mainstream Rock Top 40.
