Daniel Seavey works as a vocalist, tunesmith, multi-instrumentalist, and studio craftsman whose style draws from rock foundations and synth-tinged alternative pop. He helped establish the multi-platinum teen-pop group Why Don't We, whose 2018 release 8 Letters topped the charts and brought the band broad notice; in 2022 he launched his own path and issued the debut EP Dancing in the Dark one year later.

Raised north of Portland in Southern Washington, Seavey immersed himself in music during childhood, mastering several instruments while performing in the church ensemble guided by his father, a pastor. During adolescence he turned toward secular sounds and found strong affinity with the work of Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar, and the Weeknd. In 2015 he tried out for season 14 of American Idol yet failed to advance; there he encountered fellow contestant Jack Avery, who invited him to form Why Don't We with Jonah Marais, Corbyn Besson, and Zach Herron. Blending vocal harmonies with R&B and electronic textures, the ensemble rapidly rose as social-media favorites, releasing several EPs before delivering the full-length 8 Letters, which climbed to number nine on the Billboard 200. The 2021 follow-up The Good Times and the Bad Ones again reached the Top Ten, after which the members entered an indefinite hiatus prompted by legal disputes over management.

Eager to begin independent work, Seavey remained in his home studio throughout 2022, recording, producing, and performing every part for the forthcoming project. Its initial single, "Can We Pretend That We're Good," mixed gritty alt-rock textures with expressive indie-pop dynamics. Subsequent tracks "Runaway" and "I Tried" joined it on the Atlantic Records debut EP Dancing in the Dark, issued in 2023.
