Dillon Carmichael

A staunch upholder of country music's longstanding customs, vocalist and tunesmith Dillon Carmichael possesses a resonant baritone along with an aptitude for reshaping longstanding genre conventions in fresh ways. His approach fuses the Bakersfield aesthetic popularized in the 1960s by Merle Haggard and Buck Owens with the rebellious outlaw ethos of the 1970s exemplified by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, while incorporating elements of Southern rock. Hailing from a Kentucky lineage steeped in regional sounds, he began earning a living as a performer prior to completing high school and later relocated to Nashville to pursue songwriting once he obtained his diploma. The 2017 debut single drew initial notice from listeners and reviewers, after which his first album Hell on an Angel arrived in October 2018; subsequent releases including the 2020 track "I Do for You" and the 2021 follow-up Son of A further established him as an emerging figure in country music.

Born in the small Kentucky community of Burgin, Dillon Carmichael developed amid relatives deeply devoted to musical expression. His grandfathers Harold Carmichael, a gospel vocalist, and Harold Montgomery, a country guitarist who performed on the Grand Ole Opry, both worked professionally in the field, as did his parents, who frequently sang in public settings. Two uncles also achieved prominence: John Michael Montgomery scored several chart successes during the 1990s, and Eddie Montgomery co-established the boisterous, Southern rock-leaning outfit Montgomery Gentry. At age 11 he received his initial guitar from his father and learned to play without formal instruction. During his teenage years he assembled a group with peers that performed at local talent competitions and casual engagements; after the ensemble dissolved he continued independently, composing material and delivering solo sets at venues across Kentucky.

At 18 his abilities attracted interest from a Nashville publishing company representative, who extended an offer contingent on high school graduation. Four days following receipt of his diploma, he relocated to Nashville, executed the publishing agreement, and began integrating into the local music scene. As his abilities matured, his sound echoed formative inspirations such as the straightforward storytelling of Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings alongside the defiant rock approach of Lynyrd Skynyrd. He eventually partnered with producer Dave Cobb, renowned for collaborations with Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, and Chris Stapleton. Their studio work yielded the October 2017 debut single "Old Songs Like That," a tribute to traditional country, followed by the February 2018 release "Made to Be a Country Boy." Both tracks earned favorable coverage in country outlets, as did the October 2018 full-length Hell on an Angel issued via Riser House Records. That project reached number 12 on the Heatseekers chart and number 37 on the independent albums tally. Album cuts "Dancing Away with My Heart" and "It's Simple" gained traction at radio and on streaming platforms, while the standalone 2020 single "I Do for You" performed even more strongly by entering the country airplay chart at number 40. Building on this progress, he issued the 2021 sophomore album Son of A, which featured the well-received tracks "Sawin' Logs" and "Hot Beer."
