Happy Diving came together in 2013 from San Francisco's East Bay as a fuzz-drenched indie rock band known for its noisy style. Drawing from '90s indie and alternative rock icons such as Dinosaur Jr. and Weezer, the group entered the recording studio without delay, resulting in their debut EP that came out in early 2014—a self-titled release blending sludge with melody. Soon after, they secured a contract with Father/Daughter Records and returned to producer Jack Shirley, whose credits include Joyce Manor and Deafheaven, at Atomic Garden to lay down a complete album. That effort, Big World, was tracked over a mere two days and issued in November 2014, building on their intense, distorted sound while earning praise akin to East Coast peers like Ovlov. In 2015, the So Blunted 7" appeared, leading the band to partner with San Diego's Topshelf Records, an indie label that put out their second full-length album, Electric Soul Unity, the next year.
