Nai Harvest came together as a duo in Sheffield in 2011 after guitarist and vocalist Ben Thompson watched his previous band dissolve and asked his friend Lew Currie to handle drums. Without adding a bassist, the pair started performing and soon issued a split single alongside Papayér before self-releasing their own debut single, Feeling Better, the following year. Their early material drew heavily from American emo acts such as Mineral and American Football, featuring intricate guitar lines and broken song forms. Additional 2012 output arrived in the form of a split EP shared with Bonjour, Invalids, and Reno Dakota plus a split cassette with Five Leaf Nettles, during which time the group sharpened its stage presence through expanding live routes. Shifting from that emo foundation toward a denser, catchier approach, they tracked their debut album Whatever and placed it with Dog Knights Productions and Pinky Swear Records for a 2013 release. Extensive road time inside a van gave Thompson and Currie space to refine their craft and broaden the music’s reach by folding in shoegaze, dream pop, and 1990s indie rock elements. The initial results of this direction surfaced on the 2014 EP Hold Open My Head, issued jointly by their newly secured American label Topshelf Records. The duo crossed the United States that autumn, then returned to the UK to prepare their follow-up record alongside producer Bob Cooper; Hairball appeared on Topshelf in April 2015.
