Juan Son, the Mexican Latin alternative singer and songwriter, first gained widespread recognition in the late 2000s as frontman of the experimental rock outfit Porter, only to launch a solo career with a well-received debut album in 2009. He entered the world as Juan Carlos Pereda on January 24, 1984, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and established Porter six years later in 2001. A subsequent year of music studies in London prompted the group’s temporary dissolution during his absence. After returning home, he reassembled the band and oversaw the creation of its seven-track debut EP, Donde los Ponys Pastan (2005). Two years afterward Porter issued its first full-length effort, Atemahawke (2007), which reached the Mexican Top Five and featured the track “Host of a Ghost.” Following the record’s strong chart performance and the band’s notable sets at Vive Latino and Coachella, Porter disbanded in 2008, prompting Juan Son to pursue an independent path. His first solo release, Mermaid Sashimi, arrived in 2009, earning critical praise and a Top Ten placement while spotlighting the singles “Nada” and “Goldfish.”
