Born in 1970, Michael Nehrig took the stage name Kosmonova while working as a DJ, remixer, and producer. He surfaced in 1996 during the ongoing development of Germany’s early-’90s techno and hardcore movement, releasing the acid-house-tinged single Raumpatrouille (Space Patrol). The following year Olaf Dieckmann helped shape his next chart success, Take Me Away, which was succeeded by Ayla and Fiocco’s Celebrate. In 1998 Kosmonova teamed with former Culture Beat vocalist Tania Evans for the track “Singin’ in My Mind,” an effort that yielded his first full-length album, Supernova. DJ Mike Brings later teamed up with him on the 2000 production Acid Folk.
