Biography
Mares of Thrace took shape in 2009 as a Canadian heavy metal outfit fronted by vocalist and guitarist Thérèse Lanz, whose approach blended doomy sludge, hardcore punk, and experimental post-metal. The Calgary-based project began as a duo with Lanz alongside drummer Stef MacKichan; together they delivered their first full-length, The Moulting, that same year and earned notice across the region. In 2011 the pair followed with Pilgrimage, a Polaris Prize-nominated three-act concept album that drew its narrative from the Biblical account of David and Bathsheba. Personnel shifts and personal circumstances slowed the group’s progress over the subsequent ten years, yet Mares of Thrace reemerged in 2022 with the forceful Exile, now featuring Casey Rogers on both bass and drums alongside Lanz.
