Guatemalan pop/rock outfit Radio Viejo came together in 1989 when singer Luilly Donis, drummer William Girón, and guitarists José Ordoñez and Giovani López launched the project; bass player Mauricio Ordoñez came aboard shortly afterward. Their first appearance on a local radio playlist arrived with the track “Tú La Tienes Que Olvidar.” Following Mauricio Ordoñez’s departure, Rolando Amado took over on bass and the revised lineup cut Claroscuro for the independent imprint Primera Generación, a set that included the regional favorites “Angel” and “Una Cerveza Más.” In 1994 the band took part in a Guatemalan rock festival whose performances were later compiled and issued on CD as Libertad de Expresión Ya. Shortly afterward they supported the Argentinean group the Sacados and the Mexican act Magneto. The year 1997 saw them lay down Feria Paraíso. Two years later they joined the acoustic-focused local event Atmósfera Omplog, whose recordings BMG-Ariola subsequently released.
