Kabah channeled Mexico’s emerging teen idol phenomenon through their signature pop balladry. The ensemble, named after the monumental Mayan ruins in Yucatan, assembled in late 1993. Their January 1994 appearance on the widely watched Mexican telenovela Aguejetas De Color instantly turned them into a nationwide phenomenon. That summer they captured first place at the Valores Juveniles Acapulco Festival, then defended the top spot for the next three consecutive years. By February 1996 they had also become the on-air spokespersons for Fanta/Coca Cola across Mexican television. Although the band’s self-titled, self-produced debut album hinted at future commercial traction, their real breakthrough arrived with the March 1997 release of La Calle De Las Sirenas (The Street of the Mermaids), which moved more than 500,000 units and earned three gold certifications plus one platinum. Esperanto, their third album, reached stores in August 1998, while XNE arrived two years afterward.
