Listen on Coda
Just as Dashboard Confessional revolves around Chris Carrabba, Time and Distance centers on Greg McGowan. After departing his previous band, the Charleston, WV-based singer/songwriter turned to his acoustic guitar simply to occupy idle hours and began channeling raw emotion into new material. He soon moved beyond solo home performances by cutting a demo for sale at regional gigs, which helped cultivate a devoted local audience. While still lacking a label deal, Time and Distance issued the EP Blood Loss for an Excuse in September 2003 via I-Surrender and began sharing stages with Taking Back Sunday, Midtown, the Reunion Show, Punchline, and other emo/punk outfits. A complete lineup eventually formed around McGowan without severing the project’s acoustic foundation, adding guitarist Derek Reese, bassist Aaron Squared, and drummer Ryan Ware. The band enlisted noted producer Matt Squire (Panic! at the Disco, Northstar) to helm its first full-length, The Way It Should Be, which appeared as a self-released title in August 2006. By the close of that year only McGowan remained, returning the act to its original one-man configuration. In fall 2008 the project signed to California-based Not Alone Records and prepared to track a third album under producer Rob Freeman (Houston Calls, Hit the Lights). The resulting Gravity surfaced in July 2009, captured with drummer Tom Gascon and bassist Jeff Motekaitis; subsequent live dates featured Cody Conway on guitar and vocals, Preston Scott on bass, and Nathan Workman on drums.
