Biography
Viper, a Brazilian heavy metal outfit with decades of activity, has long distinguished itself through repeated shifts in its approach to the style. Its initial releases drew from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, most notably Iron Maiden, whereas subsequent works incorporated prog elements on Theatre of Fate, punk energy on Coma Rage, and alternative pop textures on Tem pra Todo Mundo.
The group originated in 1985 when brothers Pit on bass and Yves Passarell on lead guitar teamed with guitarist Felipe Machado, drummer Cassio Audi, and vocalist Andre Matos. Following several demos, Viper issued its debut album, Soldiers of Sunrise, in July 1987; the effort delivered a raw Iron Maiden-inspired sound and achieved considerable success within Brazil. With Sergio Facci installed on drums, the band tracked Theatre of Fate in 1989. That sophomore LP displayed notably more developed compositions shaped by classical music, and when paired with Andre Matos’ enhanced vocal delivery it yielded a standout progressive metal record. Although Matos favored continuing in a neo-classical progressive direction, the remaining members preferred a return to conventional metal, prompting his departure to form Angra.
No immediate replacement arrived for Matos; instead Pit Passarell assumed vocal duties while Renato Graccia took over drums. Evolution appeared in 1992 and exchanged the earlier classical references and operatic vocals for a direct hard-rock approach. Coma Rage in 1994 steered Viper toward another new path, embracing a raw and heavy punk-rock sound that underscored the band’s habit of avoiding repetition across records—an inclination further explored on the 1996 alternative rock and pop-infused Tem pra Todo Mundo.
Critics and listeners alike dismissed that album, and combined with the label’s bankruptcy plus the loss of the masters the band entered an extended break. Viper resumed touring in 2001 after Yves Passarell exited to concentrate on Capital Inicial. The seventh studio album, All My Life, arrived in 2007 and introduced vocalist Ricardo Bocci. A further pause ended in 2012 with a Brazilian tour that welcomed back original singer Andre Matos. Following Matos’ fatal heart attack in 2019, Viper stabilized around the lineup of Leandro Caçoilo on vocals, Machado and Kiko Shred on guitars, Passarell handling bass and vocals, and Guilherme Martin on drums, culminating in the 2023 release Timeless. Pit Passarell died during cancer treatment on September 27, 2024, at age 56.
