Biography
Formed in Lübben during 2007, the German metalcore outfit We Butter the Bread with Butter began when guitarist Marcel Neumann joined forces with singer/drummer Tobias Schultka. Their sound fused metalcore and deathcore with electronic textures, while the playful moniker signaled an intentional break from the grim, nihilistic tone that defined many contemporary metal acts. In 2008 the band inked a deal with Redfield Records and issued its debut album, Das Monster aus dem Schrank, before launching German support tours alongside Callejon, the Parachutes, and A Day to Remember. By the arrival of the 2010 follow-up Der Tag an dem die Welt Unterging, the lineup had expanded to five members through the enlistment of second guitarist Kenneth Iain Duncan, bassist Maximilian Pauly Saux, and drummer Can Özgünsü. Schultka soon departed to pursue a non-musical career and was succeeded by vocalist Paul Bartzsch; Duncan likewise exited before the 2012 EP Projekt Herz appeared. At that stage the group already enjoyed solid footing across Germany and Europe while attracting North American listeners without ever having performed on that continent. Goldkinder, the third full-length, reached stores in 2013, secured broader distribution, and registered strong chart placement inside Germany. Wieder Geil! followed in 2015 as the fourth album. To close out the decade the band issued singles such as “Klicks. Likes. Fame. Geil!” along with a crushing rendition of Big Shaq’s viral track “Man’s Not Hot.” The 2020s opened with the Electric Callboy collaboration “Hypa Hypa,” after which the fifth studio effort, simply titled Das Album, surfaced in 2021.
