Biography
Annika Wells writes and performs pop songs marked by an open, lyrical approach that surfaces both in her independent releases and in featured appearances. Breakthrough recognition arrived via repeated pairings with electronic DJ and producer Illenium that produced several Top Ten Dance/Electronic Songs entries, among them the 2017 single "Crawl Outta Love" and the 2020 track "Nightlight." She has supplied material to the Jonas Brothers, BTS, Hailee Steinfeld, and the Chainsmokers as well as additional acts. Her first EP, Eat Dirt, reached listeners in 2023.
Born in 1996, Annika Marie Wells spent her childhood in Sleepy Hollow within Marin County, California, beginning piano study at age four. Poetry followed, and by her teenage years she was composing original material. While enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston she created and tracked her first single, "Break," alongside fellow student and producer Guilio Cercato; after they shared the recording online it spread rapidly, drawing interest from record labels and fellow performers.
She took on professional songwriting assignments and relocated to Los Angeles to advance her work. There she wrote "Crawl Outta Love" for Illenium, who issued the cut in 2017 featuring her vocal. The song climbed to the Top 30 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Charts and received the top award at the International Songwriting Competition. Additional collaborations with Illenium ensued, among them "Sad Songs" with Broken Sky and "Broken Ones" with Anna Clendening. In 2019 she accompanied Illenium on tour and, the following year, notched another Top Ten Dance Chart success with "Nightlight." Concurrently she accumulated further credits, crafting songs for Hailee Steinfeld, the Chainsmokers, the Jonas Brothers, BTS, Whethan, Sabrina Carpenter, Steve Aoki, Tove Styrke, and Matoma, among numerous others.
On her own, Wells issued successive singles such as 2021’s "Love Sucks" and "Bitter End" and 2022’s "Modern Art." Her debut EP, Eat Dirt, appeared in 2023 and included the tracks "Suck It" and "Crying Over You."
