Biography
Dave McCullen entered the world as David Vervoot on December 28, 1977, in Belgium. By sixteen he was already spinning records in local commercial clubs. Prior to gaining recognition under his own name, he took a production role at A&S Records, where he first encountered Peter Luts, who would become his enduring creative partner. The pair went on to shape hits for several acts, among them Ian Van Dahl and Roadblock. McCullen himself proved skilled on keyboards, as a singer, lyricist, and behind the boards, juggling parallel projects that both surfaced in 2001: his first solo DJ outing, the Stomper single “Cocaine in my Brain,” and his contributions to the Belgian dance/electronica trio Lasgo’s debut album Some Things on EMI. With Luts he had formed Lasgo, fronted by vocalist Evi Goffin; the record immediately climbed to number five on the domestic charts and captured a TMF Award for Best National Single. Already popular in Spain, Germany, and Denmark, Some Things reached additional audiences when it appeared in the United Kingdom and Scotland in 2002. Despite the demands of Lasgo’s touring and promotional cycle, McCullen kept advancing his independent work. His 2004 club track “Bitch” broke through decisively, spawning multiple remixes and reissues that established him as an inventive presence in dance and electronica circles apart from his pop achievements.
