Having already established herself within Mexico's entertainment industry before reaching her twenties, Dulce María executed the challenging shift from youthful performer to seasoned vocalist and actress with apparent ease, aided by prominent television appearances and music releases. Born Dulce Maria Espinoza Savinon in Mexico City during 1985, she started featuring in television commercials while still young and joined the regular cast of Plaza Sesamo, Mexico's counterpart to Sesame Street, along with the Discovery Kids Channel in 1993. Following several roles in Televisa network soap operas, she gained an opportunity to display her singing abilities by entering the preteen pop group K.I.D.S. in 1996, which achieved success with the hit singles "La Mejor de Tus Sonrisas" and "Prende el Switch" prior to disbanding three years later.

Subsequent engagements included the brief duo D&D alongside former bandmate and rumored boyfriend Daniel Habif, as well as the Latin pop ensemble Jeans, before she secured parts in the telenovelas Clase 406, El Juego de la Vida, and most notably Rebelde, where she portrayed Roberta Pardo, daughter of a renowned singer who assembled fellow students into a pop band. In an instance of life mirroring fiction, the fictional ensemble RBD evolved into an actual chart-topping act, issuing nine studio albums and achieving worldwide sales of 20 million records before concluding activities after the 2008 Gira del Adios world tour. During 2009 she entered a solo agreement with Universal and worked with Akon on a remix of "Beautiful," plus Tiziano Ferro and Anahi on "El Regalo Mas Grande," ahead of contributing two tracks to the telenovela Verano de Amor.

Following her announcement that the debut album would appear in two installments, she delivered Extranjera: Primera Parte during 2010 and the Segunda Parte the following year. Over the subsequent three years the singer maintained an intensive touring schedule in support of the project while also taking acting roles in both film and television. She put out her second solo release, Sin Frontera, in 2014, which reached number six on the Latin Pop Albums chart. The next year she served as a PETA spokesperson in an advertisement urging viewers to avoid circuses that employed animals, and during 2016 she took a significant part in the successful telenovela Corazón Que Miente. Recording activity continued as well, with the release of five advance singles and videos that year, among them "No Sé Llorar," which accumulated seven million views on YouTube, and the Joey Montana duet "Volvamos." The resulting album, titled DM, appeared in early 2017.
