El Compa Chuy serves as the performing identity of Jesús Alfredo Rodríguez Hernández, a vocalist raised in Culiacán, capital of Mexico’s Sinaloa state. Specializing in corridos—story-driven folk songs built around a central character, unfolding events, and a closing moral—Rodríguez typically performs with a stripped-down quartet of voice, accordion, guitar, and tuba.

Born into a household steeped in music, he first practiced corridos in private during childhood. At fourteen he began immersing himself in Culiacán’s local arts community, purchasing a sound system that he rented to performing groups. When one ensemble rehearsed without its vocalist, members caught Rodríguez quietly harmonizing as he passed by and invited him to join; he soon became a regular presence, lending his voice to several acts around the city.

Following a period in the United States spent processing squid in a California plant and washing cars in Phoenix, Arizona, while continuing to sing informally, Rodríguez secured a contract with Sony Music’s Latin roster. The label issued his debut album, Alacrana Lavada, in March 2008. Twelve months later he delivered the full-length El Niño de Oro, which contained the single “El Corrido de Katch,” his interpretation of Alfredo Ríos’s narco corrido—a style chronicling the drug trade concentrated in northern Mexico, particularly Sinaloa and Culiacán—praising the protagonist’s ostentatious wardrobe and lavish habits. The track entered the Billboard Latin Songs chart at number 43 and ultimately climbed to number four. His third album, Gente Peligrosa, appeared on October 20, 2009.
