The roots of Mexican Latin rock foursome Genitallica lie in Genitalandia, a comic project launched in 1997 by friends Andrés, Beno, Gildardo, Antulio, and Gallo. One year afterward the same five young artists began writing songs drawn directly from those comics, giving rise to the band. A demo was tracked in November 1998, after which live shows quickly led to a deal with Sony Music. Relocating to Seattle, the group worked with producer Barret Jones on its debut album ¿Picas o Platicas?, which appeared in 2001 accompanied by a comic book illustrated by Mexican Mario Videgaray and Sergio Moreno. The sessions also yielded the tracks “Mi Mariguana” and “¿Qué Fue Lo Que Paso?,” both of which were placed in the Altavista film Por La Libre.
