Drawing from the Weeknd’s R&B stylings and the emo-punk rawness of Mayday Parade, St. Louis-bred singer, songwriter, and producer Goldn channels the introspective emotions of those sources into his own explorations of love and heartbreak. Missouri-raised, he started writing songs at ten and sang them in church. Emphasizing beat-driven electronic textures and candid lyrics delivered through a silken voice, Goldn put out his debut single, “Used To,” in 2017. The track, marked by a Weeknd-meets-808s & Heartbreak Auto-Tune atmosphere, gained strong streaming traction and surpassed a million plays. Relocating to Los Angeles to capture additional material, he released “Mama, I’m So Sorry” in 2018. That same year he collaborated with electronic producers Kungs and Stargate on the single “Be Right Here,” then issued the project Once Upon a Star, Pt. 1. Sparked by a difficult breakup, the release contained the tracks “Break It” and “Love Me Blind.” In 2019 he followed with a second EP, happysad. Reflecting the mood and sonic palette of Post Malone at his most downcast, the concise collection spotlighted the single “heartbreak drugs.”
