In the 2010s Arkansas native Goon Des Garcons assembled a diverse underground rap catalog by deploying his abilities as both vocalist and producer to fashion off-kilter anthems, ultimately securing a Def Jam contract in 2020. Although mainstream recognition arrived only toward the end of that decade and into the following one, he had already been writing rhymes nearly ten years earlier; his first release, the gritty trap cut “Party On,” surfaced in 2013 and echoed the style of A$AP Rocky. Demonstrating range, he followed with the brisk “HUNDRED$” and the atmospheric cloud-rap track “THANKS4NOTHIN.” Later in 2014 he issued his first proper project, the 11-song Meanwhile… EP, whose sound drew heavily from the prevailing Southern rap climate of the period, before unveiling the full-length debut YOUNGDIRTYBASTARD. Largely produced by his frequent partner Mach Soul, that album pushed the MC toward broader, more exploratory territory. After a comparatively quiet 2015, he resurfaced the next year with the high-impact FORTHETIMEBEING EP, trading earlier mellow textures for distorted low-end and sharply etched vocal deliveries. The same aesthetic guided subsequent singles such as “Parade,” “REVENGE IN LA,” and the Coffey-assisted “OUT THE FLAMES.” August 2017 brought a third EP, Sore Loser, billed by the artist as “a sonic landscape by GDG*,” on which he emphasized his production work while minimizing vocal presence. Throughout the remainder of the decade he aligned himself with prevailing trap currents, a progression that reached its peak with the 2019 release Cheers to the End of the World; during the same stretch he also put out remastered versions of earlier unreleased material. The year 2020 proved especially active: amid a steady stream of new tracks, Goon Des Garcons scored his most prominent placement yet with the Cuco collaboration “A24.” After signing with Def Jam, he generated anticipation for his second album by rolling out “5AM,” “JFC,” and “RIDE,” the last of which featured Fredo Bang, Reese LAFLARE, and Landstrip Chip.
