Biography
Shane Niemi, a singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles, produces ironic and somber pop under the name iamnotshane. Self-directed videos that feature his eccentric dance routines commonly accompany the tracks. Multiple EPs and singles, one of them the 2016 set Sad, came before his first album, One Less Year Alive, which appeared in 2021. That year was followed by the 2022 release of “Maybe My Soulmate Died,” currently his most-streamed recording.
Niemi took up songwriting at age twelve. The piano-driven single and video “Sinister” marked his entry into the field in 2014. His debut EP, Sad, arrived in 2016 and included “Insecure,” the first of his recordings to reach millions of streams. A stronger dance focus emerged on later singles such as “Afterlife” and “Security,” culminating in the 2020 EP iamnotshane on Avant Garden/Island Records. Independent distribution resumed by the close of that year, and the album One Less Year Alive reached listeners in 2021. “Maybe My Soulmate Died” surfaced in 2022 while he headlined dates across the U.S. and Europe, becoming his most successful song to date; further singles such as “What Doesn’t Kill You Mutates and Tries Again” and 2023’s “I’ve Been Nothing But Funny and Sexy to You” followed in preparation for a second album.
