LaRussell Thomas, a West Coast rapper recognized for his sincere and emotionally resonant delivery, launched Good Compenny to champion up-and-coming Bay Area talent. Initially recording as Tota before switching to his given name, he has sustained a rapid pace of output that includes several albums and EPs each year, among them 2023’s Motion (with Link+Up) and 2024’s DJ Gutta Butta Presents: 3 Point Play.

Raised in northern Vallejo, California—a city noted for its deep reservoir of distinctive hip-hop voices—he began rapping at age eight yet found his early schooling uninspiring. Transferring to Vallejo’s Peoples’ High School allowed him to flourish. After graduation he became a father to a daughter, temporarily shelving any music ambitions; instead he accepted a high-paying aerospace job that he held for six years while sporadically releasing material as Tota, until he resigned to pursue music full-time.

He established Good Compenny in 2017 and continued issuing singles as Tota, among them the injustice-focused “Cyntoia Brown” and the autobiographical “6am in Vallejo.” He later cited January 2018’s The Field Effect as his first proper project; its reception spurred him forward. That July he delivered the expansive album Never Forget Who You Are, then spent much of 2019 and 2020 freestyling over his own beats. June 2020 brought Silence Won't Save You, his debut release under the name LaRussell. In December the label premiered its own live-performance video channel, styled after the Berlin-based Colors Show; the first clip featured LaRussell performing “Do That Little Dance,” simultaneously promoting The Field Effect, Vol. 2. Subsequent artists showcased on the platform included Iman Europe, Tah-Hir, Zharmila, and Jazs.

Brooklyn-based manager Hovain Hylton soon began overseeing LaRussell’s affairs, allowing the rapper to handle West Coast operations while Hylton covered the East Coast. 2021 yielded Marlin 7, the first of several Tope-produced projects, along with collaborations involving Skeyez, RRAREBEAR, Armani DePaul, and Dom Bailey. May 2022 saw both the expansive LaRussell & The Homies: Live at the New Parish and the eight-track Justin Credible Presents: LaRussell EP, which included appearances by Glacier Boyz, Samuel Yun, and Jordan Jackson. Before the year closed, Tope also produced Days Like This, Champagne Gummies, and 96' Bulls. Output remained steady in 2023 with Family Business and Motion (with Link+Up); 2024 brought the Hit-Boy collaboration Rent Due, followed by DJ Gutta Butta Presents: 3 Point Play.
